Beet roots is believed to be native of the Mediterranean region of Europe and probably Western Asia. It has been used as a vegetable for the last 2000 years, even by early Greeks and Romans.
Beet roots also called beet belong to the same family as chard and spinach. It has a firm, clean globe shaped vegetable with no soft wet areas. The beet root is characterised by deep red skin and flesh.
Beet leaves have a bitter taste like chard, but is rich in chlorophyll. Although bitter, the greens have a higher nutritional value than its roots.
