Mushrooms are a staple in my house for flavoring so many foods. I always knew it was a nutrition food but until I decided to do some research on additional benefits on mushrooms, I didn't realize how much more important they were to our health.

Mushrooms have been used for thousands of years both as food and for medicinal purposes. They are often classified as a vegetable or a herb, but they are actually fungi. While there are over 14,000 mushrooms, only about 3,000 are edible, about 700 have known medicinal properties, and fewer than one percent are recognized as poisonous.

Mushrooms are low in carbohydrates, calories and sodium and are cholesterol and fat free! They are high in riboflavin and contain as much fiber as 1 medium tomato. They are also a good source of niacin, pantothenate and copper.

Mushrooms are valuable health food - low in calories, high in vegetable proteins, chitin, iron, zinc, fiber, essential amino acids, vitamins & minerals. Mushrooms also have a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine . Their legendary effects on promoting good health and vitality and increasing your body's adaptive abilities have been supported by recent studies.

The health benefits of Mushrooms:

1. Stimulates the Immune System

2. Aids in combating disorders of auto-immune system such as allergies, erythematosus lupus and systemic lupus.

3. May help in the treatment of cancer.

4. Has been used successfully to diminish the harmful effects of chemotherapy.

5. Improves hypertension and hypotensions

6. Promotes good blood circulation by eliminating thrombi (blood clots)in the blood streams.

7. Mushroom protects the liver from damaging toxic chemicals.

8. Has a calming effect to the body's muscles, thus can help against insomnia.

Maintaining a strong immune system is very important, especially as you get older. Mushrooms are among the best foods you can eat to bolster your immunity. In addition to their immune benefits, research into the mushroom cancer link holds great promise for the future.

Aloe vera

Aloes have been used worldwide for more than 3,500 years. They are desert lilies and there are more than 200 varieties. Aloe vera is an aloe plant. Aloe vera, which means “true aloe” in Latin, is generally the most widely used and most effective species of aloe.
The aloe vera plant has long, spiked leaves, which are thick-skinned and contain a clear gel-like substance.

Aloe vera is used today in many products, including cosmetics, skin lotions and moisturizers, burn gels and even sun screen creams. Juice is also taken from the aloe vera leaves. The bitter juice is often prepared as a flavored drink and is used to help with digestive problems.

The possible benefits from the use of aloe vera gel and juice include:
1. May help sooth skin injured by burns, irritations, cuts and insect bites.
2. May help moisturize and soften the skin.
3. May help speed the healing of skin wounds, burns and other injuries.
4. May help (when taken internally)with constipation, diarrhea and other intestinal problems.
5. May speed and improve general healing when taken internally.
6. May relieve itching and swelling of irritated skin.
7. May help kill fungus and bacteria.
8. May improve the effectiveness of sun screen products.

Aloe Vera plants are very easy to care for and easy to grow in frost-free climates – either as houseplants or outdoors. However aloe vera plants do need a lot of sunlight, so it’s best to place them in a sunny spot, or near a window that gets lots of sunlight. A common mistake that many people make is the tendency to over-water. Remember these plants are succulents. They hold water in their leaves and root system to cope with long periods of drought, so they need less water than you might think.
